In the second quarter of 2024, the performance of the top social networking applications in Africa displayed distinct trends across weekly downloads, revenue, and active users. This data, sourced from Sensor Tower, provides a comprehensive overview of the market dynamics on a unified platform.

WhatsApp Messenger maintained a consistent weekly revenue, with figures hovering around $6 to $7. Weekly downloads exhibited variability, peaking at approximately 1.8M in the first week of April and tapering off to around 1.3M by the end of June. Active users showed steady growth, reaching nearly 150M by the end of the quarter.

Telegram Messenger saw a gradual increase in weekly revenue, culminating at approximately $18K in the final week of June. Downloads experienced a steady rise, beginning at 0.89M in early April and climbing to over 1.1M by the end of the quarter. Active users also grew, from 26.3M to 27.8M over the same period.

Facebook reported a stable weekly revenue, averaging around $17K to $20K. Downloads fluctuated, starting at 2.3M in the first week and dropping to about 1.7M by the end of June. Despite this, active users steadily increased from 153.7M to 158.8M.

Messenger had a modest weekly revenue, with notable spikes of $23 and $32 in May. Downloads showed a downward trend initially, from 1.4M to 0.6M, but rebounded to about 0.8M by the end of the quarter. Active users remained fairly stable, fluctuating around 105M to 108M.

Threads did not generate revenue but saw a consistent increase in downloads, starting at 0.24M and peaking at 0.29M in early June. Active users also grew from 3.4M to over 5M by mid-June before slightly declining to around 5.1M.
